Although originally an ancient settlement, Cockermouth remains an attractive largely Georgian market town. The earliest recorded market charter was granted in 1221. It is located inland, in the west of Cumbria, where the River Cocker flows into the River Derwent, there are a wide variety of Cockermouth b&b to choose from. Keswick is 14 miles to the east (22km). Although the town is situated not far from Ennerdale, Crummock Water, Loweswater, and Bassenthwaite lakes, in summer it is less crowded than many Lakeland towns. A cycleway follows a former railway track which spans a high bridge over the Cocker and offers good views of the town and river. The Norman Cockermouth Castle has a tilted tower, rather like Pisa, which hangs over the renowned Jennings Brewery. Wordsworth House in Main Street was the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth. The town is also the birthplace of Fletcher Christian of Bounty fame. Cockermouth has a variety of quality accommodation with a number of hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts (b&b) within a few miles of the centre.
