Maryport is on the coast north of Workington. First established as the Roman fort, Alauna, as a base for the western end of Hadrian's Wall, Maryport was for many years known as Ellenfoot. The name was changed when the town became important as a port. In the 19th century, it became an industrial centre with an iron foundry, coal mines, port, shipyards and railways. By the 20th century the town was suffering economic decline. Tourism is now the mainstay of Maryport. There is an aquarium, a maritime museum and a Roman museum. More recently, the Wave Centre, opened containing a theatre and conference facility, an exhibition on the history of Maryport, the Tourist Information Centre and a gift shop and bistro. Another venture, Maryport Golf Club now has an established 18 hole course. The town is on the Blues Music calendar with a successful three-day festival every summer. Bed and breakfast accommodation (b&b) can be found in the town and within two miles of Maryport while a choice of hotel/inn accommodation is available within six miles, some located between Workington and Cockermouth.
