Millom Millom is a small, unspoilt coastal town situated north of Barrow-in-Furness on the Duddon River estuary. The Duddon Sands are well known for their mussels and cockles. After the discovery of iron ore in 1855, Millom became prosperous. The iron ore mining took place in nearby Hodbarrow. The flooding of the iron workings, which closed in 1968, created a lagoon, which is now a major RSPB nature reserve. Millom Folk Museum, in railway station buildings, includes a full scale reconstruction of a local drift mine, a replica of a miner's cottage kitchen and a blacksmith's forge. The small museum and information centre concentrate on the town and its people, mining and the iron works. Millom makes an excellent western base for a touring holiday of the Lake District with its peaceful setting and quiet roads. It has a number of hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfast (b&b) establishments and self catering accommodation within the nearby area.
